Long Term Care Assistant
Up one levelNursing assistants make valuable contributions in providing health care. Nursing assistants are trained to care for people who are ill or need help in caring for themselves. The care given is always under the guidance and supervision of licensed health care providers such as nurses or physicians. The competencies needed to successfully complete the objectives for this course are identified from the skill standards produced by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education’s Testing Division for the Health Certification Project of the Oklahoma State Department of Health using the DACUM process. Students may exit from the course after obtaining Long Term Care aide certification.
- Introduction to Long Term Care Assistant
- The student will identify and determine appropriate responses that define the scope and practice of a nurse assistant in Long Term Care.
- Role of the Nursing Assistant in Long Term Care
- The student will identify and determine appropriate responses that define the scope and practice of a nurse assistant in Long Term Care
- Safety for Long Term Care Nursing Assistant
- This course will provide instruction to enable the student will provide for the safety needs of clients/residents.
- Basic Human Needs for Residents/Clients
- This course will provide knowledge and skills to assist the student to promote client/resident independence and demonstrate psychosocial care skills.
- Communication for the Nursing Assistant
- This course will teach knowledge and skills to assist the student to communicate effectively with residents/clients, families and co-workers.
- Consumer Rights, Ethical & Legal Issues Affecting the Nursing Assistant in Long Term Care
- This course will provide the student with information to assist in the identification of appropriate responses to protect and promote resident/client’s rights.
- Infection Control for Long Term Care Assistant
- This course will provide knowledge and skill in order ofr the student to demonstrate infection control measures for specific pathogens.
- Resident/Client Mobility, Positioning and Transfer
- This course will provide knowledge to enable the student to transfer, ambulate and position residents/clients safely.
- Basic Nursing Skills
- This course will provide opportunities for the student to demonstrate basic nursing skills in the LTC/HH setting.
- Supervised Clinical Experience in Long Term Care Assistant
- The student will demonstrate skills and knowledge learned in classroom and laboratory when in supervised clinical experience.
- Care for the Patient with Dementia/Alzheimer's Diseases
- This course is designed to provide knowledge and skills in order for the student to exhibit special considerations when caring for clients/residents with Alzheimer’s/Dementia.
- Death and Dying
- This course will provide knowledge to enable the student to perform special care procedures for residents/clients exhibiting symptoms of impending death.
- Normal and Abnormal Body Structure and Function
- The student will distinguish between normal and abnormal body structure and function and recognize age-related changes in body functions/structures.
- Long Term Care Assistant
- This course meets requirements set by the Oklahoma State Dept. of Health for Long Term Care Nurse aide curriculum.
