Administrative Medical Assistant
Up one levelPrior to beginning this Career Major, the student must complete the Core Curriculum, Core Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology, Core First Aid and Healthcare Provider CPR.
- Administrative Medical Office Procedures
- Students will apply the basic concepts and principles of medical office practices and procedures with entry-level proficiency in the performance of duties in the administrative or front office.
- Introduction to Administrative Medical Assisting
- Students will receive an overview of the medical assistant career. The course will include a brief history of medicine. Desirable characteristics of a medical assistant, benefits of credential testing, and participating in professional organizations are covered. Medical office ethics, legal and ethical principals, communication skills, and patient education are also included.
- Medical Billing
- This course covers information necessary to understand basic functions of processing medical claims. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the legal issues of insurance claims, procedural and diagnostic coding, billing, problem solving, managed care systems, proper form preparation and several major types of medical forms. Students will be introduced to information about major insurance programs and federal health care legislation.
- Introduction to Medical Office Manager
- Students will learn basic skills toward becoming a proficient medical office manager including policy and procedure development, payroll processing, and concepts of teamwork.
- Beginning Word Processing Applications
- Students will use computer and word processing software to create, modify, store, retrieve and print documents. Word processing features include create, edit, print, format, spell check, thesaurus, file management, styles, merge and sort tables and graphics. This course is an introduction and overview with emphasis on learning and aplying the mechanics of the software.
- Medical Coding
- The student will be able to correctly enter internal classification of disease (ICD9-CM) codes on a claim form, identify current procedural terminology (CPT), and explain their application to a medical office. The student will also identify various insurance plans, learn the rules and regulations of Medicare filing, translate written documentation into a numerical language and describe legal issues concerning medical records.
- Medical Informatics
- The student will gain an understanding of the automated medical office by using a computerized medical office package. Included in this software package are billing, charge slips, scheduling, insurance form preparation and patient data storage. The student will demonstrate familiarity with methods and techniques used in literary research for medical professionals. The student will further be exposed to the basic concepts of email, search engines, web page creation and internet research.
- Medical Law and Ethics
- This course covers information necessary to understand the legal and ethical standards of the medical assisting practice. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of ethical issues, contracts, healthcare worker liability, medical litigation, drug regulations, descrimination issues, OSHA rules, bioethical issues, medical records, acceptable fees, and laws tha tmay affect the health care professional. Emphasis is placed upon the settings that employ medical assistants.
- Transcription for Healthcare Environments
- By using transcribing equipment and word processing software the learner will produce medical documents, such as medical correspondence, chart and progress notes, and history and physical reports. Emphasis is placed on proofreading, correct formatting of documents, and appropriate grammar and punctuation usage in all documents.
- Health Informatics Internship in Healthcare Setting
- This internship is designed for the Health Informatics Career Majors, Administrative Medical Assistant, Insurance/Billing Technician, Medical Coder, Medical Transcriptionist and Medical Records Specialist. This internship allows a work-based experience in the specialized Career Major chosen by the student.
