Wildlife Science and Management


Wildlife Science and Management is a one-credit course for students interested in wildlife and its conservation and ecology as well as enjoying wildlife through sport hunting and fishing. Course content includes meaning and importance of wildlife species, history of wildlife conservation, safety with wildlife, species identification, endangered species, wildlife biology and ecology, habitat protection and establishment, protection of wildlife (animals, plants, and other species), legal regulations, and hunter safety. FFA and supervised experience will be included as appropriate.

Introduction to Agriscience


Note: The Hunter Education program of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation may be included with Unit 8 of the course depending on student interests, local educational needs, and policies of the Department.

Unit WLF1: Importance of wildlife science and management (7 hours)

Benchmark WLF1-1: Students will explain the meaning of wildlife and name species found in the local area.

Benchmark WLF1-2: Students will list and describe major values of wildlife to humans.

Benchmark WLF1-3: Students will discuss the history of wildlife conservation.

Unit WLF2: Career entry and advancement in wildlife science and management industries (7 hours)

Benchmark WLF2-1: Students will identify occupations in wildlife science and management and list the competencies needed for occupational entry.

Benchmark WLF2-2: Students will name and describe important personal skills for success in wildlife science and management careers.

Unit WLF3: Wildlife science and management safety (3 hours)

Benchmark WLF3-1: Students will assess safety situations in wildlife science and management and choose appropriate safety practices.

Benchmark WLF3-2: Students will properly select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment for wildlife science and management work and recreation.

Unit WLF4: Wildlife biology (23 hours)

Benchmark WLF4-1: Students will classify wildlife species found in the local area by habitat, use as game, and scientific methods.

Benchmark WLF4-2: Students will identify the life processes of wildlife species, including predator and prey relationships.

Benchmark WLF4-3: Students will explain the life span of wildlife and list the five life span stages.

Benchmark WLF4-4: Students will discuss the importance of genetics and heredity in wildlife.

Benchmark WLF4-5: Students will discuss the anatomy and physiology of animal wildlife and identify major body systems.

Benchmark WLF4-6: Students will explain the reproductive processes of animal wildlife.

Benchmark WLF4-7: Students will describe the nutrition and food needs of animal wildlife.

Unit WLF5: Wildlife ecology and habitat (23 hours)

Benchmark WLF5-1: Students will explain the meaning and characteristics of wildlife ecosystems.

Benchmark WLF5-2: Students will explain food webs and chains that are important with local wildlife.

Benchmark WLF5-3: Students will classify animal wildlife by feeding groups.

Benchmark WLF5-4: Students will identify food sources and classify plants as browse, herbage, and mast.

Benchmark WLF5-5: Students will identify habitat requirements and assess the qualities of local habitats.

Benchmark WLF5-6: Students will assess local habitat and select practices to promote habitat improvement.

Benchmark WLF5-7: Students will discuss habitat pollution and destruction and identify practices to protect local habitat.

Benchmark WLF5-8: Students will develop a habitat management plan for a local habitat.

Unit WLF6: Wildlife population study (12 hours)

Benchmark WLF6-1: Students will describe the importance of wildlife population study and assess population in a local habitat.

Benchmark WLF6-2: Students will identify causes of wildlife population losses.

Benchmark WLF6-3: Students will identify and propose corrective actions to promote wildlife populations.

Unit WLF7: Plants and other wildlife species (15 hours)

Benchmark WLF7-1: Students will describe the benefits of plant wildlife.

Benchmark WLF7-2: Students will discuss the importance of native forests.

Benchmark WLF7-3: Students will establish and maintain wildflower populations and habitat.

Unit WLF8: Enjoying wildlife (23 hours)

Benchmark WLF8-1: Students will identify ways of enjoying wildlife and assess the sustainability of wildlife use.

Benchmark WLF8-2: Students will identify and apply legal regulations and controls on wildlife in the local area.

Benchmark WLF8-3: Students will explain hunting as a sport and identify hunting equipment.

Benchmark WLF8-4: Students will identify and demonstrate important hunter safety practices.

Benchmark WLF8-5: Students will describe sport fishing and equipment used.

Benchmark WLF8-6: Students will demonstrate appropriate methods to use in non-consumptive uses of wildlife.

Unit WLF9: Agricultural education (7 hours)

Benchmark WLF9-1: Students will manage an appropriate supervised experience in wildlife science and management.

Benchmark WLF9-2: Students will identify opportunities for participation and advancement in the FFA related to wildlife science and management.
