Introduction to Agribusiness


Introduction to Agribusiness and Management, a one-credit course, is the first course in the Agribusiness and Management Pathway and is for students with interests in managing and operating agricultural businesses. Major topics include the nature and importance of agribusiness and agricultural industry; the meaning and role of management; economic systems and ways of doing business; the meaning and nature of entrepreneurship; obtaining and using resources; risk management; starting an agribusiness; developing a business plan; complying with legal regulations; records and financial analysis; personal development; careers and employability skills; FFA; and supervised experience.

Introduction to Agriscience


Unit AGB1: The meaning and importance of agribusiness (7 hours)

Benchmark AGB1-1: Students will define agribusiness and explain the three sectors of agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB1-2: Students will discuss the importance and scope of agribusiness in Oklahoma and the nation.

Unit AGB2: Career entry and advancement in agribusiness and management (5 hours)

Benchmark AGB2-1: Students will identify occupations in agribusiness and management and list the competencies needed for occupational entry and advancement.

Benchmark AGB2-2: Students will name and describe important personal skills for success in agribusiness and management careers.

Unit AGB3: Personal and occupational safety in agribusiness and management (4 hours)

Benchmark AGB3-1: Students will assess personal and occupational safety situations in agribusiness and management work, including manufacturing facilities, and choose appropriate safety practices.

Benchmark AGB3-2: Students will properly select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment when working in agribusiness and management careers.

Unit AGB4: Economic systems and agribusiness (11 hours)

Benchmark AGB4-1: Students will identify kinds of economic systems and describe the role of government in each.

Benchmark AGB4-2: Students will explain the meaning and kinds of competition.

Benchmark AGB4-3: Students will name types of agribusiness ownership and describe each.

Benchmark AGB4-4: Students will explain the meaning and interaction of supply and demand in profitable agribusiness endeavors and describe other basic economic principles.

Unit AGB5: Entrepreneurship (12 hours)

Benchmark AGB5-1: Students will explain the meaning and importance of entrepreneurship.

Benchmark AGB5-2: Students will list and interpret characteristics of successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurships.

Benchmark AGB5-3: Students will identify the kinds and sources of resources needed in entrepreneurship endeavors.

Benchmark AGB5-4: Students will describe how to identify opportunities in entrepreneurship and sources of assistance.

Benchmark AGB5-5: Students will identify major steps in starting a new agribusiness to assure its success.

Unit AGB6: Business plans (16 hours)

Benchmark AGB6-1: Students will define a business plan and discuss why such a plan is important to the success of an agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB6-2: Students will name the parts of a business plan and indicate the information that is prepared for each.

Benchmark AGB6-3: Students will describe the process of developing a business plan and use a team approach to develop a plan for a sample agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB6-4: Students will identify legal requirements that must be met in agribusiness.

Unit AGB7: Management in agribusiness (12 hours)

Benchmark AGB7-1: Students will explain the meaning and importance of management.

Benchmark AGB7-2: Students will list and explain managerial skills.

Benchmark AGB7-3: Students will describe problem solving processes used in management.

Benchmark AGB7-4: Students will name and describe the roles of management in an agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB7-5: Students will explain levels of management.

Benchmark ABG7-6: Students will describe risk management in an agribusiness.

Benchmark ABG7-7: Students will identify ways of improving customer relations.

Unit AGB8: Records and financial concepts (11 hours)

Benchmark AGB8-1: Students will describe the purposes and kinds of records that are kept in agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB8-2: Students will define and identify fixed and variable costs.

Benchmark AGB8-3: Students will define and calculate depreciation.

Benchmark AGB8-4: Students will name and explain the kinds of financial records kept in agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB8-5: Students will explain the meaning and processes of recordkeeping and how technology can be incorporated.

Benchmark AGB8-6: Students will use records to analyze the financial situation of an agribusiness related to profit, solvency, and liquidity.

Benchmark AGB8-7: Students will describe methods of pricing goods and services.

Benchmark AGB8-8: Students will discuss the importance and proper use of credit in an agribusiness venture and calculate simple and compound interest problems.

Benchmark AGB8-9: Students will explain the meaning and importance of taxation, insurance, and depreciation in the agricultural industry.

Unit AGB9: Communication in agribusiness (19 hours)

Benchmark AGB9-1: Students will explain the communication process in agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB9-2: Students will identify and prepare examples of written communications used in agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB9-3: Students will discuss the role of oral communication in agribusiness and prepare and deliver a short presentation.

Unit AGB10: Leadership in agribusiness (16 hours)

Benchmark AGB10-1: Students will discuss meaning and importance of leadership in agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB10-2: Students will name and describe leadership styles.

Benchmark AGB10-3: Students will identify the important traits of agribusiness leaders, discuss how these traits are developed, and develop a personal growth plan.

Benchmark AGB10-4: Students will explain the importance of time and task management and list useful approaches.

Benchmark AGB10-5: Students will describe the importance and use of delegation and motivation in agribusiness.

Benchmark AGB10-6: Students will explain the use of teams in agribusiness leadership.

Benchmark AGB10-7: Students will examine the importance of ethical business practices in the agricultural industry.

Unit AGB11: Agricultural education (7 hours)

Benchmark AGB11-1: Students will manage appropriate supervised experience in areas of agribusiness and management.

Benchmark AGB11-2: Students will identify opportunities for participation and advancement in the FFA related to agribusiness and management.
