Introduction to Ag Power and Technology
This is a one-credit course to develop knowledge and skill in the fundamentals of agricultural mechanics and power equipment. Physical science and mathematics principles will be integrated throughout the course. Major areas of content include the meaning and importance of agricultural mechanics and power; personal and employability safety; identifying, using, and maintaining common hand and power tools; planning and organizing facilities and shops; using measuring devices; selecting and using wood and metal materials; using fasteners and hardware; preparing and using simple project plans; metal fabrication; and machinery and engines. FFA and supervised experience will also be included as appropriate.

Introduction to Agriscience
Unit IAM1: The nature and importance of agricultural mechanics and power (9 hours)
Benchmark IAM1-1: Students will explain the meaning of agricultural mechanics and power.
Benchmark IAM1-2: Students will discuss the history of agricultural mechanics and power and its influence on production agriculture.
Benchmark IAM1-3: Students will explain the importance of mathematics and physical science in agricultural mechanics.
Benchmark IAM1-4: Students will relate concepts of work, mechanics, heat, light, sound, magnetism, and electronics to agricultural mechanics.
Benchmark IAM1-5: Students will identify and describe uses of simple machines agricultural mechanics.
Unit IAM2: Career entry and advancement in the agricultural mechanics and power industry (5 hours)
Benchmark IAM2-1: Students will identify occupations in agricultural mechanics and power and list competencies needed for occupational entry.
Benchmark IAM2-2: Students will name and describe important personal skills for success in agricultural mechanics and power careers.
Unit IAM3: Personal and occupational safety in agricultural mechanics and power (8 hours)
Benchmark IAM3-1: Students will assess personal and occupational safety situations in agricultural mechanics and power work and choose appropriate safety practices.
Benchmark IAM3-2: Students will properly select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment when working in agricultural mechanics and power.
Benchmark IAM3-3: Students will demonstrate appropriate operation and safety skills on all power tools and equipment before use.
Benchmark IAM3-4: Students will recognize unsafe work conditions in agricultural mechanics and power and take the appropriate action.
Unit IAM4: Hand tools for wood and metal work (12 hours)
Benchmark IAM4-1: Students will identify hand wood- and metal-working tools and demonstrate proper use.
Benchmark IAM4-2: Students will demonstrate the ability to select appropriate tools for a given job.
Benchmark IAM4-3: Students will demonstrate proper care, cleaning, and storage of hand tools.
Unit IAM5: Power equipment used in wood and metal work (13 hours)
Benchmark IAM5-1: Students will identify common power wood- and metal-working tools and demonstrate proper use.
Benchmark IAM5-2: Students will distinguish portable and stationary power tools and explain appropriate uses of each.
Benchmark IAM5-3: Students will demonstrate the use of operators’ manuals in the adjustment, operation, and maintenance of power tools.
Benchmark IAM5-4: Students will evaluate condition, operator protection, and electrical grounding of power electric equipment before operation and, if needed, take appropriate corrective action.
Unit IAM6: Facilities used in agricultural mechanics and power work (8 hours)
Benchmark IAM6-1: Students will name and describe the features of facilities needed for agricultural mechanics and power work, including size, construction materials, doorways, utility service, ventilation, and safety equipment.
Benchmark IAM6-2: Students will plan the layout of a facility showing efficient and safe work and storage areas.
Benchmark IAM6-3: Students will identify and explain color coding of agricultural mechanics work areas.
Unit IAM7: Metal fabrication (28 hours)
Benchmark IAM7-1: Students will explain the meaning and importance of metal fabrication.
Benchmark IAM7-2: Students will identify the kinds of metal materials and explain the use and working attributes of each.
Benchmark IAM7-3: Students will demonstrate the ability to use plans for constructing a metal project.
Benchmark IAM7-4: Students will demonstrate the measurement and marking of materials.
Benchmark IAM7-5: Students will distinguish between cold and hot metal work and name applications of each.
Benchmark IAM7-6: Students will name the kinds of welding equipment and identify major parts of the equipment.
Benchmark IAM7-7: Students will explain the welding process and demonstrate simple shielded arc welding practices following safety guidelines.
Benchmark IAM7-8: Students will demonstrate simple oxyacetylene welding techniques with and without filler rods following safe practices.
Benchmark IAM7-9: Students will demonstrate simple metal cutting techniques with oxyacetylene equipment following safe practices.
Unit IAM8: Fasteners (5 hours)
Benchmark IAM8-1: Students will identify common fasteners used with wood construction and explain the use of each.
Benchmark IAM8-2: Students will demonstrate the proper use of fasteners with wood construction.
Benchmark IAM8-3: Students will identify and demonstrate the proper use of common hardware in wood construction.
Benchmark IAM8-4: Students will identify common fasteners used with metal and explain the use of each.
Unit IAM9: Wood construction (12 hours)
Benchmark IAM9-1: Students will identify and explain the characteristics and uses of common wood construction materials.
Benchmark IAM9-2: Students will demonstrate basic skills in designing, drawing, and calculating the cost of a project.
Benchmark IAM9-3: Students will demonstrate the proper measurement and cutting of wood construction materials.
Benchmark IAM9-4: Students will demonstrate the proper assembly of a wood construction project.
Unit IAM10: Agricultural power (13 hours)
Benchmark IAM10-1: Students will identify sources of power and provide examples of how power is used in agriculture.
Benchmark IAM10-2: Students will identify kinds of tractors and equipment used in agriculture.
Benchmark IAM10-3: Students will identify kinds of engines by the fuel used and explain advantages and disadvantages of each by fuel type.
Benchmark IAM10-4: Students will list preventive maintenance practices with small engines and perform one practice.
Unit IAM11: Agricultural education (7 hours)
Benchmark IAM11-1: Students will manage appropriate supervised experience in agricultural mechanics and power.
Benchmark IAM11-2: Students will identify opportunities for participation and advancement in the FFA related to agricultural mechanics and power.
