Forestry
: Forestry is a one-credit course for students with interests in forest and tree farm production, management, protection, and harvesting. Course content includes the meaning and importance of forestry, history of forestry, tree products and benefits, legal aspects of forestry, forestry safety, kinds of forest land, urban forestry, tree biology and growth, dendrology, tree health and nutrition, fire protection, prescribed burning, tree and wood measurement, land surveying, cruising, remote sensing and geographic information systems, silviculture, reforestation, harvesting, and wood products. FFA and supervised experience will be included as appropriate.

Introduction to Agriscience
Unit FOR1: Importance of forestry and tree farming (8 hours)
Benchmark FOR1-1: Students will explain the meaning of forestry and name important forestry products.
Benchmark FOR1-2: Students will discuss the importance of the forestry industry in the state and nation.
Benchmark FOR1-3: Students will contrast and compare tree farming with native forestry.
Benchmark FOR1-4: Students will explain the meaning and importance of urban forestry.
Unit FOR2: Career entry and advancement in forestry (4 hours)
Benchmark FOR2-1: Students will identify occupations in forestry and the forest industry.
Benchmark FOR2-2: Students will name and describe important personal skills for success in forestry careers.
Unit FOR3: Forestry safety (5 hours)
Benchmark FOR3-1: Students will assess safety situations in forestry and choose appropriate safety practices.
Benchmark FOR3-2: Students will properly select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment in forestry.
Benchmark FOR3-3: Students will discuss legal aspects of safety in forestry work and industries.
Unit FOR4: Tree biology (11 hours)
Benchmark FOR4-1: Students will identify tree species found in the local area by common and scientific names.
Benchmark FOR4-2: Students will identify the major parts of a tree and explain the functions of each part.
Benchmark FOR4-3: Students will explain how trees grow and reproduce.
Benchmark FOR4-4: Students will discuss the importance of genetics and heredity with trees.
Unit FOR5: Measurement in forestry and forest products (17 hours)
Benchmark FOR5-1: Students will discuss forest land surveying and measurement.
Benchmark FOR5-2: Students will explain the meaning and importance of cruising and demonstrate cruise methods on standing timber.
Benchmark FOR5-3: Students will explain the measurement of trees and make common measurements.
Benchmark FOR5-4: Students will demonstrate the measurement of sawlogs, pulpwood, and poles.
Benchmark FOR5-5: Students will make tree growth measurements.
Benchmark FOR5-6: Students will describe the use of remote sensing and GPS in forest measurement.
Unit FOR6: Forest ecology and habitat (13 hours)
Benchmark FOR6-1: Students will explain the meaning and characteristics of forest ecosystems.
Benchmark FOR6-2: Students will identify and explain physical factors in a forest ecosystem.
Benchmark FOR6-3: Students will identify and explain biological factors in a forest ecosystem.
Benchmark FOR6-4: Students will identify forests by developmental stages and crown type.
Unit FOR7: Silvicultural practices (13 hours)
Benchmark FOR7-1: Students will explain the meaning of silvicultural practices and name common practices.
Benchmark FOR7-2: Students will describe how thinning, cleaning, and cutting promote forest growth.
Benchmark FOR7-3: Students will explain the meaning and use of prescribed burning in forest improvement.
Unit FOR8: Artificial reforestation (16 hours)
Benchmark FOR8-1: Students will explain the meaning and importance of artificial reforestation.
Benchmark FOR8-2: Students will identify methods of reforestation and assess the merits of each.
Benchmark FOR8-3: Students will determine the sources of seedlings and follow guidelines in planning reforestation.
Benchmark FOR8-4: Students will plant tree seedlings following approved practices.
Unit FOR9: Promoting forest growth (13 hours)
Benchmark FOR9-1: Students will discuss conditions needed for tree growth.
Benchmark FOR9-2: Students will name and explain hazards in forest health.
Benchmark FOR9-3: Students will describe the hazards of forest fires and identify
methods of fire prevention and control.
Benchmark FOR9-4: Students will identify practices that promote tree growth and health.
Unit FOR10: Forest products (13 hours)
Benchmark FOR10-1: Students will describe processes in harvesting trees, including felling, limbing, cutting, skidding, loading, and hauling.
Benchmark FOR10-2: Students will explain the physical properties of wood and use these properties to identify and classify wood as softwood and hardwood.
Benchmark FOR10-3: Students will classify wood products based on working characteristics and strength properties.
Benchmark FOR10-4: Students will identify wood products, including pulpwood, poles, sawlogs, and veneer.
Benchmark FOR10-5: Students will discuss the manufacture of lumber, plywood, particle board, paper, and other wood products.
Unit FOR11: Agricultural education (7 hours)
Benchmark FOR11-1: Students will manage an appropriate supervised experience in forestry.
Benchmark FOR11-2: Students will identify opportunities for participation and advancement in the FFA related to forestry.
