Agricultural Crop Production


This is a one-credit course for students interested in crop production practices, with emphasis on important agricultural crops in Oklahoma. Content includes the importance and identification of major crops; cultural practices with grain, fiber, forage, and other important crops; implementing sustainable practices in crop systems, including irrigation, pest management, and resource conservation; use of precision technologies and remote sensing information; and record keeping and other farm management practices. FFA and supervised experience will be included as appropriate.

Introduction to Agriscience


Unit CRP1: Importance and use of agricultural crops and products (4 hours)

Benchmark CRP1-1: Students will list and describe major agricultural crops in the local area, Oklahoma, and the Nation as well as globally.

Benchmark CRP1-2: Students will identify major policies and programs impacting agricultural crop production.

Unit CRP2: Career entry and advancement in agricultural crop industries (7 hours)

Benchmark CRP2-1: Students will identify occupations and needed competencies in agricultural crop production and associated industries.

Benchmark CRP2-2: Students will discuss important interpersonal skills for success in agricultural crop production careers.

Unit CRP3: Agricultural crop production safety (3 hours)

Benchmark CRP3-1: Students will assess safety situations with agricultural crops and choose appropriate safety practices.

Benchmark CRP3-2: Students will explain the meaning and use of materials safety data sheets (MSDS).

Benchmark CRP3-3: Students will properly select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment when working with agricultural crops.

Unit CRP4: Sustainable crop production (10 hours)

Benchmark CRP4-1: Students will explain the meaning and importance of sustainable crop production.

Benchmark CRP4-2: Students will name and explain important practices in sustainable crop production.

Benchmark CRP4-3: Students will discuss the meaning and use of resource conservation in crop production.

Benchmark CRP4-4: Students will discuss the use of technologies in sustainable crop production.

Unit CRP5: Plant biology and growth (17 hours)

Benchmark CRP5-1: Students will classify important agricultural plants by life cycle.

Benchmark CRP5-2: Students will identify and explain the functions of the vegetative parts of plants.

Benchmark CRP5-3: Students will identify and explain the functions of major reproductive parts of plants.

Benchmark CRP5-4: Students will identify the parts of a seed and the characteristics of good quality seeds.

Benchmark CRP5-5: Students will explain conditions needed for seed germination.

Benchmark CRP5-6: Students will discuss the importance of plant genetics , breeding, and biotechnology in improved crop varieties.

Benchmark CRP5-7: Students will describe plant growth processes with agricultural crops.

Unit CRP6: General crop production practices (15 hours)

Benchmark CRP6-1: Students will name and explain general practices in sustainable crop production.

Benchmark CRP6-2: Students will identify nutrients needed for crop growth and relate nutrient needs to soil fertility.

Benchmark CRP6-3: Students will distinguish between soil preparation for traditional tillage, minimum tillage, and no-tillage crop production.

Benchmark CRP6-4: Students will discuss variations in cultural practices among agricultural crops.

Unit CRP7: Soil moisture management (17 hours)

Benchmark CRP7-1: Students will explain the meaning and importance of soil moisture management.

Benchmark CRP7-2: Students will explain the measurement of available soil moisture as related to soil moisture tension and plant root zone.

Benchmark CRP7-3: Students will explain the meaning and use of irrigation.

Benchmark CRP7-4: Students will explain methods of irrigation and assess each method for efficient water use.

Benchmark CRP7-5: Students will identify sources of quality irrigation water.

Benchmark CRP7-6: Students will explain the use of chemigation and fertigation.

Unit CRP8: Integrated pest management (15 hours)

Benchmark CRP8-1: Explain the meaning and importance of integrated pest management in agricultural crop production.

Benchmark CRP8-2: Students will identify the kinds of pests and losses caused with agricultural crop production.

Benchmark CRP8-3: Students will explain the use of pest management practices.

Benchmark CRP8-4: Students will distinguish between herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.

Benchmark CRP8-5: Students will identify the requirement for chemical applicator certification.

Unit CRP9: Grain, oil, fiber, and forage crop cultural practices (25 hours)

Benchmark CRP9-1: Students will discuss the timing and methods of planting.

Benchmark CRP9-2: Students will discuss the use of fertilizers, growth regulators, and other crop inputs.

Benchmark CRP9-3: Students will assess the use of soil moisture management practices and irrigation.

Benchmark CRP9-4: Students will identify when and how crops are harvested.

Benchmark CRP9-5: Students will discuss the meaning and importance of marketing.

Benchmark CRP9-6: Students will explain the use of appropriate winter and fallow practices.

Unit CRP10: Agricultural education (7 hours)

Benchmark CRP10-1: Students will manage an appropriate supervised experience in agricultural crop production.

Benchmark CRP10-2: Students will identify opportunities for participation and advancement in the FFA related to agricultural crop production.
