Administrators: How to support candidates

How Administrators Can Help NB Candidates . . .

Use these tips by past candidates:
  1. Acknowledge that your teachers are applying for National Board Certification. Offer your support and work with them on identified areas of need.
  2. Understand the process and the time involved. In the process, these teachers analyze what they do in the classroom and become better teachers.
  3. Support and encourage along the way. Tell them you appreciate their application, and let them know how the certification benefits your system.
  4. Provide more release time than the two days required by the state for ELO participants. The candidates will spend a lot of their own time working on the process, so please, consider extra time.
  5. When the administrators show support, co-workers tend to be more supportive. Suggest that co-workers offer assistance (videotaping, reading entries, running errands, etc.).
  6. Remove extra duties, when possible (lunchroom or hall duty for the year or even spring semester, major committees, extracurricular sponsorships, meetings, etc.). The "little" things help relieve stress and pressure.
  7. Make equipment available (video camera, microphone, projector, etc.). A computer and printer should also be made available for full time use (a laptop if possible).
  8. Support, encourage, support, . . .
