Administrators: How to support candidates
How Administrators Can Help NB Candidates . . .
Use these tips by past candidates:
- Acknowledge that your teachers are applying for National Board Certification. Offer your support and work with them on identified areas of need.
- Understand the process and the time involved. In the process, these teachers analyze what they do in the classroom and become better teachers.
- Support and encourage along the way. Tell them you appreciate their application, and let them know how the certification benefits your system.
- Provide more release time than the two days required by the state for ELO participants. The candidates will spend a lot of their own time working on the process, so please, consider extra time.
- When the administrators show support, co-workers tend to be more supportive. Suggest that co-workers offer assistance (videotaping, reading entries, running errands, etc.).
- Remove extra duties, when possible (lunchroom or hall duty for the year or even spring semester, major committees, extracurricular sponsorships, meetings, etc.). The "little" things help relieve stress and pressure.
- Make equipment available (video camera, microphone, projector, etc.). A computer and printer should also be made available for full time use (a laptop if possible).
- Support, encourage, support, . . .
